Malaria Alert (excerpt from IST Clinic newsletter MAY 2008)

Due to the long rains over the past months we have seen more cases of malaria during the month May than in any month during the past 10 years. A number of these malaria cases have been caused by infections in Dar es Salaam, whereas in previous years almost all cases were caused by infections from outside Dar es Salaam.

Classical symptoms of malaria include irregular fever spikes, headaches, muscle aches, a dry cough and nausea, but at times the symptoms can be milder with just a mild fever, headache and fatique. If in doubt, do not hesitate to have a malaria test.

With the current medication and following early diagnosis and start of medication, malaria can be treated effectively, but a delay in diagnosis & treatment can lead to serious complications.

At the same time this serves as a reminder that it is important to use malaria prophylaxis: especially in this time of the year and when traveling throughout Tanzania. This also applies to all visitors coming to Tanzania.
